Collaboration is the key for private sector to manage ESG
Steering Comittee Mosaic Rika Novayanti

MOSAIC-INDONESIA, JAKARTA — Steering Committee Muslim for Shared Action for Climate Impact (MOSAIC) Rika Novayanti reveals that private role is not small in creating an environmentally-based business atmosphere to reach Indonesia Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's) 2030. The private sector is judged to be able to play a role and collaborate actively and strategically in managing Environment, Social and Governance (ESG).

“It's more about how the private sector can collaborate in the private sector, collaborate with the government, with the public, so that this private sector has the ability to be on the same level as the government,” said Rika Novayanti during the ESG Summit Republika 2024 event on 'ESG Ala Indonesia' held at the Indonesia Stock Exchange Building (BEI), Jakarta, Thursday (12/9/2024).

He explained that, the private sector could help the government through policies. He exemplifies the carbon trading that the government is building. “This is an opportunity for private groups to do what can I do, from this part whether we will manage forests for example, then we can count the crops, and then we can make carbon financing or carbon trading,” he said. “So (the point) is how to collaborate well with each other, collaboration to be on the same level, and this is more important than just about funding,” he explained.

Rika explained that the spirit of transformation in climate change actually also comes from awareness from the society for the phenomenon. They are aware about the impact of the industrial revolution that requires emitting countries to take responsibility for the problem. That awareness then builds discussion and gives rise to the courage to speak out and intervene as a form of concern for sustainability.

Therefore, social funding of a kind of philanthropy was born. This includes funding from various countries going into countries that need major financial support, such as Southeast Asia. “These funds usually don't go directly into the private sector or the private sector, usually these funds come in to make changes to the system,” she said.

By moving at the level of system change, the private sector has a stake in the issuance of ESG improvement policies or practices. The changes that take place in the later world of the system will help not only one group, but all lines or a single entity, whether government, public, or private.

The ESG Summit was organized by the Republic to maintain the commitment of businesses and corporations to the earth. PT Republika Media Mandiri Director Nur Hasan Murtiaji explained that his party wants to keep the momentum of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues a public conversation. One of them is by holding the ESG Summit.

“This ESG Summit was held in Republika as part of our ambition to monitor the issue of ESG so that it continues to be a public conversation given the importance of implementing ESG practices in our day to day,” said Director of PT Republika Media Mandiri Nur Hasan Murtiaji at the opening of the ESG Summit, Thursday (12/9/2024).

Hasan, who is also Mosaic's Steering Comittee, said ESG practices are not only important in business and industrial operations, but are indispensable in efforts to care for and preserve the earth. In an effort to streamline ESG practices, Republika held a series of SEHATI FOR THE EARTH campaigns.

Prior to the ESG Summit at Indonesia Stock Exchange, Republika also held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) at Indonesia Stock Exchange last July. Then it continued with Funbike community activity in Yogyakarta which was attended by about 3,000 participants. In this activity Republika planted trees.

In early August. Republika held 'Bebersih Leweung' in the area of Gunung Putri, Lembang, Bandung for cooperation with Perhutani and the Provincial Government of West Java. In mid-August, Republika campaigned for the Waqf Forest in Bandung. Republika also helps companies implement ESG practices by hosting Corporate Carbon Accounting for Business Professionals. This workshop was attended by 25 participants from different companies.

This workshop helps professionals to manage greenhouse gas emissions reports from companies. The participants received materials to calculate greenhouse gases that comply with international standards and standards recommended by the Indonesian government.

In mid-September Republika will hold the ESG Award. Hasan said the ESG Summit was held to determine appropriate ESG practices for Indonesia. “Of course, Indonesia has a peculiarity in implementing ESG practices. That is why this Summit is held as a kitchen of ideas and ideas in deepening and implementing ESG in Indonesia to make it better in the future,” Hasan said.

Hasan added that as the national media, Republika also continues to take care of this issue of ESG by opening a dedicated channel ESG Now as an information channel around ESG.
