Our History

According to Purpose Climate Lab’s Climate Audience Polling in early 2021, there is a strong eagerness from Indonesians on environmental stewardship, as well as great concerns about the climate crisis.

The same survey also draws connections between Islamic belief and environmental protection. There is also high trust towards Islamic leaders on climate issues.

Our History

Indonesian society is collective & conformity driven, with strong religious faith, following rules & norms, and caring for others.

84%  somewhat believe that human activity is responsible for climate change, but as a very religious community, Indonesians also believe in the role of God in disaster and climate change.

And a majority agree that humans should take care of the environment as a mandate from God, and some disasters are punishments from God.

Muslims Congress for Sustainable Indonesia

The poll provides an opportunity to develop a scalable climate movement of cross-Islamic organizations to advance climate solutions through the adoption of religious values and the influence of Muslim leaders.

Following that, a group of initiators from LPBI NU, MLH Muhammadiyah, Republika, Universitas Gadjah Mada, and Purpose Climate Lab gathered to discuss the following actions.

A convention of cross-entity Muslim leaders and Indonesia's top Islamic groups was organized at the end of July 2023 to develop consensus on the Islamic community's response to the climate issue.

The Vice President of Indonesia addressed climate change and its impacts, as well as expressed his backing for the establishment of a climate solution movement across Islamic groups.

Objective

MOSAIC was formed as a venue for communication and cooperative action among diverse community groups as a result of the Muslim Congress for Sustainable Indonesia.

MOSAIC stands for Muslims for Shared Action on Climate Impact (Kolaborasi Umat Islam untuk Dampak Perubahan Iklim). MOSAIC’s initiatives aim to spotlight the intersection of Islam and climate and empower the ummah to drive climate action in Indonesia.
