MOSAIC-INDONESIA.COM, SIJUNJUNG — Muslims for Shared Action on Climate Impact (MOSAIC) Indonesia together with Muhammadiyah inaugurated the installation of solar panels at Buya Syafii Maarif Mosque, Nagari Sumpur Kudus Selatan, Sijunjung Regency, West Sumatra, Saturday (2/8/2025).

This initiative is part of the Sedekah Energi program, which this time carries the theme “Enlighten with Solar, To Continue Buya's Dreams” The Solar Panel has been installed in the mosque since May 2, 2025,

The program aims to literate societies to participate in the renewable energy movement from the houses of worship, especially mosques, as a tangible form of contribution to climate change solutions.

“The Sedekah Energi Program is a new form of charity that is not only worthy of worship, but also benefits the earth. God commands us to protect the earth, and through this program, Muslims can be directly involved in maintaining its sustainability,” said Elok Faiqotul Mutia, Project Leader for Sedekah Energi MOSAIC.

She hopes that Sedekah Energi can be duplicated by many parties, especially mosques in West Sumatera. Mutia said, Sedekah Energi focuses not only on solarization but also on the training process that is accessible to the public.” The training is in the form of an audit to calculate the energy requirements from solar panels to their installation,”he said.

The head of the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) of West Sumatra, Helmi Heryanto, expressed his appreciation for this initiative. He said that the program to be in line with local government efforts in developing clean energy facilities in West Sumatra.

“We are very much welcome and support that this program can be extended to other areas, especially those areas where electricity is still not evenly available, such as in the Mentawai Islands,” he said.

He explained that currently the energy mix in Sumbar is increasing. Sumbar's primary energy mix of Renewable New Energy (EBT) has reached 30.59 percent. Well above the national EBT which is still 14 per cent. Meanwhile, on a power-generating basis, Helmi claims Sumbar's EBT has reached 52 percent. “Only 48 percent of our current electricity generation comes from fossil energy,” he said.

He added that the existence of solar power plants (PLTS) like this one also inspires the government to accelerate the clean energy transition. Wali Nagari Sumpur Kudus Selatan, Khairul Basri also expressed his gratitude and thanks for the help of the solar panel.

“Thank God, our mosque is no longer experiencing power outages. Previously, we charged about IDR 350 thousand per month for electricity bills,” said Khairul, who is also the Takmir of Buya Shafii Masjid Maarif Sijunjung.

The Sedekah Energi Program, has been running since 2022. Previously, installation has been carried out in several locations such as West Nusa Tenggara, Yogyakarta, and West Java. This year, West Sumatra became the new location receiving program benefits. The Buya Syafii Maarif Mosque is the site of the sixth solar panel installation.
